Need info from California folks

I may be moving to southern California in a few months and need some information about the Twentynine Palms / Yucca Valley area. How much does it cost to live, quality of life in that area, traffic, what kind of place is it to live, etc. Anybody out there familiar with this area? Let me know. Remember, I'm a rube from the South Dakota wilderness. To me, "rural" means it takes 20 minutes to drive to your nearest neighbor. "Urban" means there's one store within walking distance.
